Decorating for the Holidays on the Cheap

There’s something really comforting about a home filled with warm holiday decorations — a Christmas tree and holiday lights just seem to make the cold weather and stressful shopping season that much more enjoyable. However, a tree, lights, wreaths, and nativity scenes can all get pretty expensive. Save some money on your decorating this year by following a few of these tips and you’ll have more to spend on gifts!

Skip the Ornaments. If you’re just starting out and only have a few ornaments to hang, don’t worry about it. Just use lights to decorate your tree. You can collect ornaments over the course of the year. They’re great to pick up as souvenirs of places you’ve visited — an ornament will get much more use than a postcard or shot glass!

Make Your Own Stockings. Using felt or fabric froma local craft store, you can easily make your own Christmas stockings. You can easily fashion a pattern for cutting the right size pieces and even the worst seamstress should be able to stitch them together. The festive colors and prints hanging from your fireplace will spruce up your home in no time and hardly cost you anything. The same goes for a Christmas tree skirt.

Wrap Some Presents Early. If you’ve already purchased some presents, wrap them and put them under the tree, making them part of your decorating scheme. You’ll kill two birds with one stone — decorating festively and avoiding last-minute wrapping!

Plan Ahead for Next Year. Make a note to snap up some wreaths, ornaments and Christmas lights on sale once this year’s holidays are over. If you’re willing to switch to using a fake tree, you may even want to buy one after December 25. You should also look to stock up on wrapping paper and gift tags. They’ll all be selling at a fraction of the price!
