Click and Choose: The World of Online Dating

From shopping to education, entertainment to dating, the internet is a powerful tool that continues to shape our culture. For single people in the US (all 54 million of them) looking online for that certain someone is a welcome respite from the big bad world of dating. Gone are the days of bar hopping in the vain hope that Mr. Right will appear magically on the stool next to you.

Online dating allows for mature and honest communication between singles who know what they want and who aren’t afraid to put it online. The statistics speak for themselves; of the 54 million singles in the US, 40 million have tried online dating. It’s also estimated that 20% of all current relationships in the country began online.

The online dating industry as a whole brings in an impressive $1.049 billion annually and the average customer spends about $239 per year, so it’s in a company’s interest to make as many compatible matches as possible. There are so many sites to choose from these days that customers are sure to find the approach that’s right for them.

One of the strongest benefits of online dating is that people can be clear and upfront about what it is they’re looking for in a relationship and find a partner who feels the same way. To this end, the average relationship that begins online results in marriage within 18 months; compared with the 42 month courtship window of an offline relationship.

Some might think that online dating takes the mystery out of meeting someone new. While it can sometimes be off-putting to know so much about a person before you even meet them, more often than not it puts people at ease and allows them to get to know each other in a different, perhaps deeper way.

It can become harder and harder to meet people as we get older, and harder still to meet someone who is looking for the same things in life. Online dating opens up a world of new people and experiences that are simply not available in an offline world, and as such, is becoming a 21st century tool which is really shaping our social and romantic lives.
