Online Dating Profiles: Stand Out (in a Good Way)

Whether it’s through an online dating site or social media, a growing number of couples are meeting online. In fact, a recentstudy found that 20% of heterosexual couples and 70% of same-sex couples meet online.
On one hand, the growth of online dating has been great for eliminating the stigma that was once attached to it. On the other hand, it means that the singles ‘market’ is more competitive, and that it’s never been more important for singles to find ways to stand out. So, how can you make an impression in your dating profile? Here are a few online dating profile tips to keep in mind:

Be Honest
Perhaps the most important quality of a successful online dating profile is honesty. Whilst there’s always the temptation to use a photo from your younger, thinner days, remember that the person will end up meeting you eventually. The same goes for details about your career, hobbies and family. Don’t inflate your job to be something it isn’t, don’t hide the fact that you have kids and don’t claim that you ‘love to cook’ when you can barely handle microwave popcorn.

Keep it Light
Remember, an online dating profile is not a CV. Don’t simply list your academic achievements and career experience. Whilst these aspects of your life may be worth including, it’s important to also discuss your interests, hobbies and even a couple of lighthearted personality quirks. Avoid being too negative about what you don’t like, as people pick-up on negativity and will stay away.

Be Specific
One of the biggest flaws of most online dating profiles is that they’re generic. Even something that’s true, such as ‘My favourite way to spend a Saturday is going for a walk with my dog and then to the pub for a quiet beer’, really doesn’t convey much about who you are. Instead, add detail to everything you say. Don’t just say you like walking your dog; say you like walking your 3-year-old Springer Spaniel in Fort Greene Park. Don’t just mention you like a quiet beer; say that you like sipping a Bud and watching the baseball game.

An online dating profile is the opportunity to tell your story. Be honest, positive and detailed, and you can’t go wrong.
